The Styrian wood processor planned a new cross laminated timber plant with a high-performance re-sorting and planing mill as well as a lamella center at the existing site of its sawmill. Another aim of the expansion work was to take its logistics operations to an entirely new level.

The customer knew exactly what the warehouse logistics had to achieve, but not which storage technology would be best for combining production, timber sorting and storage. This was our task, specifically to create precisely fitting logistics solution that would ensure the continuous flow of materials from source to dispatch and at the same time interact with production.

Moving away from block storage
Our consultants first worked on site to collect data on volumes, load carriers, article structure and stock movements, as well as the most important recipients at the location. Based on this information and the requirements of the wood processor, we developed different variants, which were evaluated and assessed in detail. It was clear from the outset that it would not be the right decision to run a block storage facility as before. The disadvantages here were clearly in the majority โ€“ long distances, susceptibility to errors and inefficiency.

Channel storage warehouse with triple occupancy
The decision was ultimately made to go with a channel storage system, i.e. a special high-bay warehouse in which three packages per channel are stored one behind the other. A shuttle transfers the package of wood to the storage and retrieval machine; conveyors then take it to the processing area where they are readied for shipment. Finally, the packages are either loaded onto a truck with an overhead crane or transferred directly to the cross laminated timber plant.

We planned the systems in coordination with the general planner and architect, took charge of planning the necessary permits, drew up the specifications for the storage technology, and helped choose the supplier.

The high-performance channel storage system is now in service: After two years of construction, the innovative cross-laminated timber plant including sorting machine and fully automated high-bay warehouse was officially opened in June 2023. The 32-meter-high high-bay warehouse now stores a total of 29,000 cubic meters of wood over 8,000 rack spaces.
